ERPNext or Odoo: choosing for a Qatar business

Both are good. They are good at different things, and the difference matters more than the feature lists suggest.

We implement both, so this is not a sales pitch for one of them.

Where Odoo is stronger

  • A polished interface that users take to quickly.
  • A large app marketplace, so common requirements often already exist.
  • Better out-of-the-box CRM and marketing tools.
  • Manufacturing is mature and well documented.

Where ERPNext is stronger

  • Genuinely free. No per-user licence, ever. With Odoo, the useful modules are in the paid edition and the cost scales with headcount.
  • Customisation without a developer for many things. Custom fields, print formats and reports can be built from the interface.
  • One codebase. There is no community-versus-enterprise split to work around.
  • Accounting that suits a Gulf SME, with multi-currency and dimensional reporting built in.

The Qatar-specific question

Neither handles WPS payroll, end-of-service gratuity or bilingual tax invoices out of the box. Both need work. In our experience that work is cheaper on ERPNext, because you are not also paying per user while you do it.

How to decide

Count your users and project three years forward. If you will have forty people in the system, the licence difference alone will fund a lot of customisation. If you have eight users and want something working next month with minimal change, Odoo's head start is real.

The honest answer is that the implementation partner matters more than the product. A well-implemented ERPNext beats a badly implemented Odoo, and the reverse is equally true.
